The Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation, (SVHEF) an educational non-profit committed to promoting and enhancing continuing educational opportunities for Halifax County and the region, is pleased to announce the appointment of Kristy Johnson as its new Executive Director. Kristy Johnson will oversee the organization’s expanding operations, including the management of The Prizery. Additionally, Angela Townes-Yancey has been promoted to the role of Deputy Director, while Ernelle Bellamy who has been a cornerstone of The Prizery for many years, will continue in his role as Technical Director for The Prizery.
Mrs. Johnson has extensive experience in community and economic development and fund development. With a strong background in organizational leadership, she is passionate about developing innovative programming and strengthening community partnerships to advance the mission of SVHEF. Mrs. Johnson will work closely with the Board of Directors and staff to ensure the continued success and growth of the organization’s education initiatives including scholarships and its beloved community theatre and events space The Prizery.

As executive director Mrs. Johnson will be responsible for all facets of administration, will lead all fundraising activity, and serve as the chief liaison between the SVHEF and the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. The executive director will also oversee the management of the operations and staff of The Prizery.
In addition to the appointment of the executive director, Angela Townes-Yancey has been promoted to Deputy Director. Having been a valued member of the SVHEF team for 4 years, Mrs. Yancey is known for her dedication and expertise in operational management of the organization. As Deputy Director, she will continue to play a crucial role in the organization’s day-to-day operations, ensuring smooth coordination across all departments.
“Mrs. Yancey has been an integral part of our success, and we are excited to see her take on this expanded leadership role,” said Kristy Johnson. “With her deep knowledge of the organization and passion for its mission, she will be a key partner in our efforts to drive SVHEF forward.”
Ernelle Bellamy, who has successfully led the technical operations of the community theatre and events space for over 20 years, will continue in his role as Technical Director now under the management of SVHEF. His expertise in managing complex productions and overseeing the technical aspects of the theatre has been instrumental to the organization’s success. The Board and leadership team are excited to see Mr. Bellamy continue to shape the high-quality productions and events that are central to the organization’s programming.

With these appointments, SVHEF is poised to continue its mission of providing exceptional educational opportunities, inspiring arts and cultural programs, and creating a vibrant space for the community to come together.

The Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote and enhance continuing education opportunities for the citizens of Halifax County, Virginia and the surrounding area. Since 1997, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation continues to bring opportunities for post-secondary education, workforce training, and arts education to Southern Virginia.
The Community Arts Center Foundation (CACF) has transitioned management of The Prizery to the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation (CACF). Effective January 1, 2025 the management and operations of the theatre officially transitioned to the stewardship of the SVHEF.
